Disposable chopsticks are very convenient to use and low-cost. They are the most commonly used utensils when people eat out in China. Every year Chinese consumers use 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks, which amounts to around 25 million trees, accounting for 200 square meters of demolished forest area. If this rate continues, forests will disappear from China in just 20 years. However, most people are unaware of this fact.
DDB recycled over 30,000 used pairs of disposable wooden chopsticks from restaurants all over Shanghai, washed, processed, and designed them to create a five-meter-high chopstick tree structure. The chopstick tree was then broken down in the middle and displayed in a busy district of the city. Through our fallen chopstick tree, we raised awareness of the fact that the use of disposable chopsticks results in the destruction of large numbers of trees.

There are only enough trees to feed us for another 20 years. Every year China produces 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks, which amounts to around 25 million trees. If this rate continues, forests will disappear from China in just 20 years. Please refrain from using disposable chopsticks, let’s protect the environment together.
