Ellen Ehk Åkesson

“I work with both functional and sculptural ceramics. My starting point is often different containers like bowls, trays and pots, forms that we easily identify and put in context. They state something about the situation they were meant to be used for. In recent years I have worked mainly with unique objects in which function has transferred into a metaphor, only the story of function remains and the expression of form has taken over.

The direct touch of the material gives me the insights and inspiration I search for in order to make a totally imagined object. I’m inspired by the physical act of doing, like the repetitive work at the potter´s wheel, the rolling of the clay, the cutting of the knife through the clay. I’ve studied how forms grow in nature, how elements link to one another and how that process creates the final form. I try to use that same method while creating my ceramic art.

There is a long tradition of working with clay and I enjoy being a part of it. The raw unrefined materials and hands are the primary tools. There is something satisfying about taking a lump of clay and transforming it into something more sophisticated. I think it fills a basic human need.”
